In Highly Accelerated Life Tests (HALT), PCs are placed in an extremely harsh environment combining sudden temperature changes and strong vibrations occurring at random. By subjecting the PC to high stress levels, it is possible to identify internal quality issues in a short period of time. The results of these tests are used as feedback to contribute to high-quality design.
In this test, pressure is applied continually to the keyboard palm rest, simulating the load when the user is typing, to confirm whether there are any negative effects on the optic drive or the HDD underneath.
This test is conducted to check whether the PC is damaged if intense pressure is applied to a single point on the PC's body.
The display is opened and closed continuously to identify any damage to components or reductions in hinge torque.
Materials similar to the human fingertip are used to check the durability of keyboard keys.
Two methods - contact discharge and aerial discharge – are used to confirm the PC's resistance to static electricity.
The computer is shaken in three directions – on the x, y, and z axes – to determine vibration resistance. The test checks for the effects of linear movement, from large swings to minute vibrations.
The computer is dropped from a variety of angles, to determine the durability of various components.
The PC is fixed to the top of a metal pedestal to ensure that the shock is transmitted to the internal components without being alleviated by damage to the outer casing. That pedestal is then dropped onto a metal base, to determine the PC's shock resistance when the shock lasts for a short time (simulating cases in which the PC is dropped onto a hard surface).
The PC is fixed to the top of a metal pedestal, which is then dropped onto a rubber base to determine the PC's shock resistance when the shock lasts for a longer period of time (simulating cases in which the PC is dropped onto a comparatively soft surface).
※The above tests illustrate certain aspects of Toshiba's quality control system with respect to PC manufacturing. Please note that this does not add any new warranty or expand the terms of the original warranty provided when you purchase a Toshiba PC.
